Lo-fi is the easiest genre to prompt and the easiest to ruin. The whole genre is a texture decision: tape hiss, a low-passed top end, drums that land behind the beat. If the prompt does not ask for those things, Suno hands you a clean piano ballad and calls it lo-fi because you did.

Recommended BPM
60–96 BPM Lo-fi borrows its tempo from boom-bap and from resting heart rate. Under 70 it becomes sleep music, 74–90 is the classic study zone, and past 96 it turns into chillhop or funk and loses the haze. Above 100 the tape effect starts to feel like a gimmick rather than a sound.

Vocal pairing
- Instrumental is the safe default. If you want a voice, ask for humming, or a pitched-down sample used as texture.
- When there is a real vocal, keep it close and imperfect: "female vocal with a small crack in it, mixed like a demo".
- Never ask for a powerful belted vocal. One loud voice destroys the entire low-passed, behind-the-beat aesthetic.
- Spoken-word samples lifted from old films work well — describe them as "distant and low in the mix".
Production
- Name the medium: cassette, vinyl, or old tape. Each one changes what Suno does to the top end.
- Ask for the drums behind the beat. Quantised drums are the clearest sign an AI lo-fi track missed the genre.
- Keep the mix narrow and warm — wide modern stereo image is the opposite of what lo-fi is doing.
- Add one field recording per track. Rain, a tram, a fan, a café. Two becomes noise.
Common lo-fi mistakes
- Using "chill" or "relaxing" as the main instruction. Suno needs texture words, not mood adjectives.
- Asking for clean studio production. That single word undoes every other lo-fi instruction in the prompt.
- Requesting a chorus. Lo-fi loops are verse-shaped; choruses break the studying spell.
- Choosing fast BPMs. Past 100 BPM it stops being lo-fi and becomes downtempo house with tape hiss.
